LED T8 Lamp Selection Guide

The LED T8 is the fastest way to cut fluorescent energy without changing fixtures: it drops into the existing tombstones and runs on either the existing ballast or line voltage, depending on the type. The choice between types is really a choice about how much rewiring you want to do. They sit in the LED Lamps and Bulbs family alongside LED Corn Lamps and LED A19 Lamps. For whole fixture upgrades, compare LED Troffers.

Choose the T8 Lamp Type

The type decides the install and the long term maintenance. Match it to the fixture and your crew.

Type, Color, and Output

Ballast bypass lamps remove the ballast from the equation, so there is nothing left to fail and no ballast draw, at the cost of a one time rewire. Plug and play lamps install in seconds on a compatible ballast but inherit that ballast life. 4000K is the common neutral for offices and shops, with 3500K softer and 5000K brighter. Current T8 lamps deliver strong efficacy, and DLC listed lamps qualify for rebates.

Compatibility and Safety

For ballast bypass, confirm the fixture is rewired to line voltage and the correct single or double ended wiring is used, and label the fixture so future crews know it is bypassed. For plug and play, check the lamp against the ballast compatibility list. When fixtures are old or failing, a full troffer or strip fixture replacement is often the better long term value than relamping.

Frequently Asked Questions About LED T8 Lamps

Type A plug and play lamps run on the existing fluorescent ballast for a fast install. Type B ballast bypass lamps run on line voltage after the ballast is removed. Hybrid lamps work either way, giving flexibility for mixed or uncertain ballasts.

Only for ballast bypass (Type B) lamps, which run on line voltage after the ballast is removed and the fixture is rewired. Plug and play (Type A) lamps keep the existing ballast and need no rewiring.

Yes. LED T8 lamps swap one for one into existing T8 fixtures and tombstones. Choose the type based on whether you want to keep or remove the ballast.

4000K is the common neutral choice for offices and shops. 3500K is slightly warmer, and 5000K is brighter and cooler for high contrast work areas. Selectable lamps let you set this on install.

DLC listed LED T8 lamps commonly qualify for commercial utility rebates. Look for the DLC mark on the product page and check your local utility program.

Relamping is fastest and cheapest when fixtures are in good shape. When fixtures or ballasts are old or failing, a full troffer or strip replacement is often the better long term value and delivers better optics.
