Explosion Proof Lights

Explosion proof lights are sealed LED fixtures rated to operate safely in hazardous locations where flammable gas, vapor, or combustible dust is present. This category covers explosion proof high bays, flood lights, and linear fixtures for Class I and Class II Division 1 and 2 environments.

Explosion Proof Lighting Selection Guide

An explosion proof light does not prevent an explosion; it contains any spark or heat inside a rugged housing so it cannot ignite the atmosphere around it. These fixtures are specified by hazardous area classification, so the first job is matching the fixture rating to the Class, Division, and Group of the space. The three form factors in this category cover most jobs: Explosion Proof High Bays for tall process areas, Explosion Proof Flood Lights for aiming light across a yard or tank farm, and Linear Explosion Proof Lights for walkways and low ceilings. For general plant areas outside the classified zone, step back up to Industrial Lighting.

Match the Fixture to the Hazard Classification

Hazardous location ratings decide which fixture is legal to install. Confirm the area classification with your electrical engineer before ordering, then match it to the fixture rating below.

Output, Mounting, and Temperature Rating

Size output the same way you would any industrial fixture: by mounting height and target footcandles. A sealed explosion proof high bay at 20 to 30 ft typically runs 100 to 200W and replaces a 250 to 400W metal halide unit. The spec that is unique to hazardous areas is the T code (temperature code), which caps the fixture surface temperature so it stays below the ignition point of the gas or dust present. Match or exceed the T code your area requires, and confirm the ambient temperature rating if the space runs hot.

Housings, Lenses, and Wiring

Explosion proof fixtures use thick cast housings, heat tempered glass lenses, and sealed entries so the enclosure can hold pressure. Most accept standard threaded conduit, and many offer pendant, ceiling, wall, or stanchion mounts. Look for a copper free aluminum housing in areas with corrosive vapor, and plan the conduit seal fittings into the install, since those are what keep the rating intact at the fixture.

Frequently Asked Questions About Explosion Proof Lights

It means the fixture is built so that any spark, arc, or hot surface is contained inside the housing and cannot ignite the flammable gas, vapor, or dust in the area. The housing is rated to hold an internal explosion without passing flame to the outside atmosphere.

The area classification is set by your electrical engineer or facility safety program based on what flammable materials are present and how often. Class I covers gases and vapors, Class II covers dust, and Division 1 means the hazard is present in normal operation while Division 2 means it is present only under fault conditions.

The T code is the temperature code that caps the maximum surface temperature of the fixture. You pick a fixture whose T code keeps its surface below the ignition temperature of the gas or dust in your space. A lower T number means a hotter allowed surface, so confirm the required code for your area.

Yes. A sealed LED explosion proof high bay around 150W commonly replaces a 400W metal halide unit at the same mounting height, cutting energy while improving light levels and eliminating warm up time.

Most explosion proof fixtures carry high IP ratings and many offer corrosion resistant housings for wet, washdown, or chemical environments. Check the IP rating and housing material on the product page for your specific conditions.

Depending on the fixture you will find pendant, ceiling, wall bracket, and stanchion mounts. High bays usually hang from a pendant or hook, while flood styles use an adjustable trunnion for aiming.

LED explosion proof fixtures that carry a DLC listing often qualify for commercial lighting rebates. Look for the DLC mark on the product page and check your local utility program for current rebate amounts.
