Cords

Electrical cords are pre-fabricated, insulated conductors designed for portable equipment connections, pendant fixture drops, service extensions, and appliance wiring. Unlike bulk wire intended for conduit or permanent wiring, cords are jacketed for flexibility and abrasion resistance to handle repeated movement and handling in service conditions.

About Cords

Electrical cords are pre-fabricated, insulated conductors designed for portable equipment connections, pendant fixture drops, service extensions, and appliance wiring. Unlike bulk wire intended for conduit or permanent wiring, cords are jacketed for flexibility and abrasion resistance to handle repeated movement and handling in service conditions.

Common cord types include SJTW and SOOW ratings for portable tool and equipment use in wet and outdoor locations, SVT and SPT cord for pendant light fixtures and indoor appliances, and sealtite flexible conduit for industrial and outdoor equipment connections requiring additional physical protection. Ampacity, voltage rating, number of conductors, and jacket material are the key selection variables for matching a cord to its application.

For pendant light fixtures, select cord with the appropriate wire gauge to handle the fixture amperage draw, and verify the jacket material suits the installation environment (dry, damp, or wet location). Cord ends may be unterminated for custom plug or lead installation, or pre-terminated with standard connectors.

For raw wire sold by the foot or spool for conduit and permanent wiring runs, see Bulk Wire. Termination hardware and splicing connectors for joining conductors belong in Wire Connectors. Boxes and fittings for enclosing connections at junction points are in Electrical Boxes and Fittings. Browse the full Wire and Cable collection for all conductor types.
