12V LED tape is a low-voltage flexible strip suited to shorter runs in under-cabinet lighting, accent coves, display case illumination, and interior architectural applications. The 12V standard is widely used for residential and light commercial tape light, and 12V drivers are broadly available at competitive price points.
Voltage drop is the primary technical consideration: at 12V, current draw per foot is relatively high, which means long continuous runs will show dimming toward the far end of the strip. For runs exceeding 10 to 15 feet from the driver, a 24V system is generally more appropriate. 12V tape cuts easily at the designated cut points marked along the strip, and connections to power supplies, controllers, and extensions are handled through solderless snap connectors or solder pads.
