Gooseneck and Barn Light Selection Guide

Aiming a Gooseneck Light at Signage

For sign work, plan one fixture per 2 to 3 feet of sign width, evenly spaced with the end fixtures inset about a foot from the sign edges. Mount the arms so the shade sits above the top edge of the sign with the head aimed 30 to 45 degrees toward the face; that angle grazes light down the sign without throwing glare at the street or into second-story windows. Angle shades and dome shades both work over signage, while wide warehouse shades throw a softer pattern better suited to washing a facade than lighting copy. If the sign is tall or double-faced, the arm-mounted fixtures in our Sign Lights category carry higher output for the job.

Exterior Barn Lights: The Specs That Matter

Commercial exterior barn lights in this category carry wet location ratings for open wall exposure. LED heads run from roughly 1,000 lumens for entry accents up to several thousand for facade and area duty. Color temperature sets the tone of the building: 2700K and 3000K read warm and suit restaurants, breweries, and hospitality fronts, while 4000K and 5000K give retail and industrial facades a crisper appearance. Many models accept 120 to 277 volt input for commercial circuits, and select fixtures offer photocell options for dusk to dawn operation. The deep shade also does quiet glare work: it points the LED at the ground, so neighbors see the shade, not the source.

For flatter fixtures without an arm, browse Outdoor Wall Sconces. When raw facade or perimeter output matters more than character, LED Wall Packs deliver more lumens per dollar. The full exterior wall lineup lives in Outdoor Wall Lights.

Barn Lights That Ship Now, Not in Six Weeks

A large share of the barn lights market is made to order. The specialist brands that dominate the style build each fixture after the order is placed, which works for a design project with a long runway and fails a storefront that opens this month. This category takes the other side of that trade: commercial LED gooseneck and barn fixtures in standard finishes, with live stock status on every product page. In-stock fixtures ship within 24 hours, shipping is free, and there are no order minimums.

Outdoor Barn Lights: Arm Projection and Mounting

The gooseneck arm is the working part of the fixture, so size it to the job rather than the photo. Projection determines where the light lands; the wall determines what you can mount to.

Arm ProjectionWhere It Fits
12 to 18 inchesEntry doors, walkway accents, tight canopies
20 to 30 inchesStandard storefront sign bands and awning clearance
30 to 45 inchesDeep sign bands, projecting facades, stacked signage

Mounting is to a standard recessed exterior junction box on the wall face. If the fixture has to clear an awning, trim band, or shallow eave, choose an arm with a rise-and-drop profile instead of a straight arm so the head still hangs at the right aim height in front of the obstruction.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gooseneck and Barn Lights

Barn light describes the shade: the dome or warehouse-style head that came out of agricultural buildings. Gooseneck describes the curved arm that projects the head away from the wall. Most commercial fixtures combine the two, a barn-style shade on a gooseneck arm, which is why the terms travel together. A straight-arm or flush version of the same shade is still a barn light.

Pick an arm that places the shade above the top edge of the sign with the head roughly 8 to 12 inches out in front of the face, aimed 30 to 45 degrees down. For typical storefront sign bands that means a 20 to 30 inch arm; deep sign bands or projecting facades may need 30 to 45 inches. Check the fixture's listed projection dimension, not just the arm style.

Plan one fixture per 2 to 3 feet of sign width, spaced evenly, with the end fixtures inset about a foot from the sign edges. A 12 foot sign band usually takes four to six heads. Wider spacing leaves visible scallops of light and dark across the copy; tighter spacing gives a more even wash but adds cost with little visual gain.

Most commercial gooseneck and barn fixtures are wet location rated, which covers direct rain exposure on an open wall. A fixture rated only for damp locations must stay under cover, such as a soffit or deep canopy. The listing is on each product's spec sheet, and the spec sheet is the source of truth for the rating on any specific model.

2700K to 3000K reads warm and flattering, the usual pick for restaurants, breweries, and hospitality storefronts. 4000K looks cleaner and more commercial, common on retail and industrial facades. 5000K is the crispest and pairs with security-driven lighting. Match whatever site lighting already exists; mixed color temperatures on one facade look like a maintenance mistake.

Yes. Select fixtures offer a factory photocell option that switches the head automatically at dusk and dawn. Where the fixture itself has no photocell option, a wall-box or circuit-level photocell control accomplishes the same thing for a whole row of fixtures, which is often cleaner for a storefront with several heads on one circuit.

Many commercial models in this category use universal 120 to 277 volt LED drivers, so they connect directly to either standard or commercial building voltage without a transformer. Residential-grade barn lights are often 120 volt only, so confirm the input voltage range on the spec sheet before putting fixtures on a 277 volt lighting circuit.
