The housing type is the first selection decision. New construction (NC) housings attach to ceiling joists before drywall goes up. Remodel (RM) housings clip into an existing ceiling cutout from below, making them the right choice for retrofit projects in finished spaces. Canless LED fixtures combine the housing and trim into a single slim unit that installs in a shallow ceiling profile with no separate housing required.

4-inch and 6-inch apertures are the most common residential sizes. 6-inch fixtures deliver more light per can (typically 600 to 900 lumens at 9W to 15W) and are standard in living rooms, kitchens, and hallways. 4-inch cans work well for accent lighting, artwork illumination, and tight ceiling cavities. Look for IC-rated housings in any ceiling with insulation above it; AT (air-tight) construction prevents conditioned air from escaping through the fixture opening.
