About Bulk Wire

Bulk wire is single or multi-conductor electrical wire sold by the foot or on a spool for use in conduit systems, open wiring, and direct-burial applications. It is the standard product for electrical rough-in work on commercial and residential lighting projects where wire runs are custom-cut to length on the job site.

The most common types in this category include THHN and THWN building wire for conduit runs in dry and wet locations, NM-B for residential branch circuits in non-conduit applications, and UF-B for direct-burial outdoor runs. Wire is available in gauges from 14AWG up through heavier commercial sizes, in standard conductor colors to meet NEC color-coding requirements for phase, neutral, and ground conductors.

Contractors typically buy bulk wire by the spool for larger projects, or pull custom lengths for single-circuit additions and tenant improvement work. When specifying wire for LED lighting branch circuits, confirm the gauge is sized for the circuit breaker rating, total connected load, and run length. A common error is sizing for load alone without accounting for voltage drop over longer runs, which can cause LED drivers to underperform or fail prematurely.

For pre-jacketed, flexible cords intended for portable equipment or pendant fixtures, see Cords. Splicing and termination connectors are in Wire Connectors. Junction boxes and conduit fittings belong in Electrical Boxes and Fittings. Browse the full Wire and Cable collection.
