EM Backups

Emergency backup units, often called EM packs or EM drivers, are field-installed modules that allow a connected LED fixture to remain illuminated during a power outage. They are a cost-effective alternative to installing dedicated emergency lights in every space, allowing a standard LED fixture to serve as both a regular luminaire and a code-compliant emergency light.

About EM Backups

Emergency backup units, often called EM packs or EM drivers, are field-installed modules that allow a connected LED fixture to remain illuminated during a power outage. They are a cost-effective alternative to installing dedicated emergency lights in every space, allowing a standard LED fixture to serve as both a regular luminaire and a code-compliant emergency light.

Most EM backup units connect to the fixture's LED driver circuit. When line power is interrupted, the battery pack takes over and powers the fixture at a reduced output level, typically 10 to 20 percent of full brightness, for a minimum of 90 minutes as required by code.

Common applications include offices, retail stores, warehouses, and commercial corridors where emergency illumination is required but a dedicated emergency fixture would be redundant. Check the fixture manufacturer's compatibility list before ordering: EM units must match the driver wattage and type.

For dedicated emergency fixtures, see our Emergency Lights and Emergency Battery Packs categories. Exit sign solutions are listed under Exit Signs. All lighting controls are in Controls and Devices.
