About Recessed Can Housings

Recessed can housings provide the structural enclosure that holds the trim and LED module in a recessed lighting system. They are sold separately or alongside matching trim kits, and come in two primary types: new construction and remodel. New construction housings attach to ceiling joists or framing before drywall is installed. Remodel housings are designed for existing ceilings and clip to the drywall from below after the fixture opening is cut.

Housings are classified by aperture size, typically 4-inch, 5-inch, or 6-inch, and by code rating. IC-rated housings are approved for contact with insulation; non-IC housings require an air gap. Air-tight housings meet energy code requirements by minimizing conditioned air leakage into the ceiling plenum.

Starting with the right housing ensures trim and driver compatibility from the outset. For complete recessed can assemblies, see the full Recessed Can Lights category. For housing-free installations in remodel applications, Canless Recessed Lighting eliminates the housing step entirely. For drop-ceiling applications, compare LED Panels as an alternative.
