About Linear Lights with Louvers

Linear lights with louvers use parabolic or semi-specular cell louvers to block direct views of the LED source from normal viewing angles, directing light downward to the task surface while keeping the fixture itself visually comfortable. This makes louvered linear fixtures a strong choice for offices with computer workstations, video conferencing rooms, schools, and any commercial interior where glare on screens or horizontal surfaces is a concern.

Parabolic louvers are typically made from specular or semi-specular aluminum. The cell geometry determines the shielding angle, and higher-shielding-angle louvers provide more glare control at the cost of some efficiency. When specifying a louvered linear for a photometric study, use the fixture-specific IES file rather than a generic substitute, as louver geometry significantly affects the distribution curve.

Louvered fixtures perform best in spaces where the ceiling plane is visible from the workstation, such as open offices with low partitions. In spaces with high partition systems or cubicle grids, the shielding angle matters less because sightlines to the ceiling are limited. In those situations, a flat lens or drop lens fixture may deliver comparable comfort with better efficiency.

For applications that require a flush, architectural appearance rather than a louver grid, consider linear lights with regressed lens. For precision retail and hospitality applications, micro optic linear lights offer a different approach to glare control. The full range of direct linear lights covers all lens options in one place.
