Combination exit and emergency lights merge two code-required fixtures into a single unit, combining the illuminated exit sign face with one or two emergency lamp heads on the same housing. This reduces the total fixture count and simplifies wiring in smaller commercial buildings, tenant improvement projects, and spaces where mounting positions for exit signs naturally align with egress lighting coverage zones.
Combo units follow the same code requirements that apply separately to exit signs and emergency lights: continuous illumination of the exit sign face, 90-minute battery backup, and 1 foot-candle minimum at floor level from the emergency lamp heads. Most models ship with dual lamp heads that can be independently aimed toward the target floor area.
Using a combination unit does not eliminate the need for standalone fixtures in larger buildings; it consolidates where the layout allows it.
